Trip Itinerary

Day 1

We begin by meeting you at Denver Airport, Colorado. Here we will transport you to our staging area, where you can rest and recuperate from your journey.

We will then take you through the trip's logistics and introduce you to the equipment we will be using during our stay.

Day 2

We begin our journey out into the Rockie Mountains. We will stop at various points of interest and explore important ethnoecological ideas such as environmental aesthetics and watersheds.

We will set up camp in the early afternoon and spend the evening learning basic woodland skills and knowledge, such as foraging and animal tracking.

Day 3

Today we set off for Moab and the Arches National Park, our home for the next few days.

Arriving around mid-day, we will have some lunch before exploring the area. We will also create experiential learning-based opportunities to encounter how movement alters our perceptions of place.

The evening will involve workshops on topics such as multi-species ethnography, materiality and affordances before settling in for our first night in the desert.

Day 4

The morning will be spent understanding the geology of the Arches National Park, learning plant ID and beginning to process natural pigments for one of our trip projects.

After lunch, there will be some relaxation time, followed by an early evening walk into the desert to run workshops around embodiment and perceptions of the natural environment.

After dinner, we will prepare to break camp early in the morning to travel to our next location.

Day 5

Leaving early in the morning, we will head to Capitol Reed National Park. Once we have set up camp, we will take a trip to the Visitors Centre to learn about the area’s indigenous people and their history.

Returning to the camp, we will leave on foot to explore Cohab Canyon for the afternoon. Here we will gather to explore the features, perceptions and embodied experiences of place, both ours and those of other beings. Here we will also introduce the idea of animism and explore how it teaches us new ways or perceiving the world.

As with most evenings on the trip, it will be a mixture of time to relax, impromptu discussions from the day’s experiences and checking the kit ready for the next day.

Day 6

The morning will be spent working on some of the trip projects and reflecting on the themes and places we have explored.

The afternoon will focus on a rare opportunity to spend time with and learn from one of the oldest and largest organisms on the planet, Pando, a 106-acre ‘tree’, and explore intergenerational conservation and sustainability ideas.

Day 7

The morning will see us breaking camp and journeying eastward again back towards Colorado. Depending on the weather and interests of the group, there will be a discussion about different possible routes and spots to visit during the day.

Day 8

After a week camping in the mountains and deserts, to freshen up, we will spend some of the days at a natural spring spa resort. Afterwards, we will go out for a meal together before travelling the last leg of the journey.

Once we have set up camp on the final night, we will celebrate our time together and share our most impactful experiences and ideas.

Day 9

After your last night under the stars, we check, repair and pack away our equipment. We will then ferry you back to Denver Airport for your return flight.
